Czernowitzers...

It's yet again Professor Dr. John Felstiner, who drew my attention to another prominent Czernowitzer. No, it's not Paul Celan, but John's friend and collegue, Professor Dr. Dori Laub!

Dori Laub was born in Czernowitz in 1937. With his parents, he was deported to Transnistria in summer 1942. Cariera de Piatra/Obodovca, the "Stone Quarry", this place of perdition, was the fateful destination for them and so many Czernowitzers, as Paul Celan's parents, Immanuel Weissglas, Selma Meerbaum-Eisinger, Arnold Daghani and others, among them our fellow member Gerhard Schreiber too.

Dori Laub's father disappeared during a German raid prior to liberation by the Soviets and he and his mother were reunited with his grandparents who had survived in Czernowitz. He immigrated to Israel in 1950 where he attended medical school. Today he is Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University and a psychoanalyst in private practice. In 1979 he co-founded the Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies at Yale. Read more on Dori Laub's activity at our ehpes.com Blog

and realize, that his pioneering work was essential for the high significance, that Oral History gained over the last decades. Others followed in his footsteps, their projects were sometimes better funded or technically equipped, as for instance the USC Shoah Foundation - Visual History Archive

on which I reported to all of you last year, but it was "our" Professor Dr. Dori Laub and his collegues, who made the breakthrough.

Thank you so much, dear John, for your indication and let me conclude this mail by quoting Dori Laub: "Our aim [in my work with oral testimonies] was the person, the family, memories, how it began, and the aftermath."
