 Mimi,

in the morning of March 28 several Soviet army units (40th, 45th and
64th armoured brigades and 24th infantry division) crossed the Prut
west of Czernowitz (in Alt-Mamaesti and Glinytsa) and by the evening
of that day surrounded the city and took positions in some suburbs.
However, German and Romanian troops (infantry battalion, several tanks
and artillery units) remained in town overnight. In the morning of
March 29 Soviet units started moving towards the center of the city
from all directions, with scattered firefights near the train station,
in Rogatka and several other places. By 10 am the first units reached
Ringplatz. March 29 has been celebrated as the liberation day, it is
also the name of the street (former Atlasgasse).
