Dear Iris,
I accept your view of it but still, stopping the search at that hilarious moment, did not seem to me then or - does today - but the act of a good natured guy, who went through the motions he was ordered to perform, and perhaps detested, and therefore decided right there to give us a break.
As to such flashes of memory in detail - I confess that I do possess a photographic memory - on the expense of a horrible lack of memory when it comes to names. I can easily - and almost instantly - recognise today a person I had met with 70 or 60 years ago, because her or his facial features stuck in my memory - but cannot recall the name of a person that I met several weeks or months before. However such terrifying events, especially in childhood, are burned into the memory like on a DVD today. They are non-erasable.
Best regards
Mordecai
