To add to Mimi's email....in Czernowitz you can go to the cemetery and
instead of entering the Jewish side go down the path on the Christian side
and you will get to the admin office. Unless you speak the local
language, take interpreter! Staff very efficient, have access to locations etc
and there is a standard fee to pay. Cornel

Hello Nahum,

My name is Miriam Taylor, I am a member of the Czernowitz-List
and am writing you in response to your Email, asking
who is responsible for the Jewish cemetery in Czernowitz.

The Jewish cemetery in Czernowitz, officially belongs to the city.
The city's cemetery administration keeps all the records of burials,
both old and new. They also are supposed to maintain the cemetery.

Unfortunately, they do a very poor job of maintenance.
Until two years ago, they could not use herbicides and lots of trees,
bushes and vines grew all over the cemetery.

In 2009 a number of members of the Czernowitz-List formed
an organization for the restoration and maintenance of the cemetery.
Our organization is called:
"Czernowitz Jewish Cemetery Restoration Organization",
or in abbreviated form: CJCRO.
We are a not for profit organization, registered in the US and
our organization is open to anyone who wants to join us.
There are no membership fees and the organization is run in
a democratic manner.
We collect contributions from people who want to see the cemetery
restored and maintained. All the contributed money is spent
on clearing the cemetery of wild trees, bushes and vines.
Eventually we plan to also re-erect gravestones which have fallen,
or are in danger of doing so.
Currently, I am the president of CJCRO.
Two members of the board of CJCRO, live in Israel,
in case you would prefer to contact them, I will send you their Email
addresses.

You can access photographs of the cemetery, by accessing
the following Picasa-web albums:
1. CJCRO work at Czernowitz/Chernivtsi Jewish cemetery
2. Cz. Jewish cemetery photographs, Mimi's photographs, April 2013

If you plan to visit the Czernowitz Jewish cemetery and find
the graves of specific people, be aware of the following:
The numbering system of the various plots, "Parzellen" was changed
around 1960. For instance: a grave which was registered
as being located in Parzelle 31A, under the new system, is now
considered to be in area #97.
Among the photographs in my Picasa web albums, there is
an official map of the cemetery, on which the numbers
according to the old system are superimposed.

JOWBR has the names of the people interred in the cemetery
and the location of each grave.

For those who contribute to CJCRO, I will be glad to do the necessary
research and find the location of a specific gravestone.

With best wishes,

Mimi
