Czernowitzers...
Hungry for books, after the dawn of "Der Tag" a few days ago, I just completed the reading - in parallel - of two memoirs, dedicated to the June 1941 deportations from Czernowitz to Siberia, followed by decades of banishment, starvation, diseases, cases of death, humiliations, etc.:
"Nach Sibirien verbannt" by Julius Wolfenhaut
"Sibirische Erinnerungen" by Sidi Kassner
Both books are in German language and you are kindly invited to read my short book review:
http://hauster.blogspot.de/2013/07/nach-sibirien-verbannt-sibirische.html
In addition, Sidi Kassner's memoirs are available in English - FREE AND ONLINE - at our ehpes.com Blog:
http://ehpes.com/blog1/2013/01/24/sidi-kassner-from-czernowitz-deported-to-siberia/
Of course I knew about these deportations to Siberia before, but only now I'm able to roughly comprehend the living conditions of the deportees, "living" being an extenuation of their real situation! Reading Julius Wolfenhaut's memoirs, you'll discover, as footnotes, several short profiles of Czernowitzers:
