Why Popovici is not known in Australia, I do not know.
The deportation of the Jews of Bukovina and Besarabia to Transnistria
is also, largely ignored or forgotten everywhere.

In Chernivtsi there is a sizable Romanian population.
On a governmental level the relations between Ukraine and Romania
are bad. There is a dispute about some small islands in the black sea.
In Chernivtsi the portrait of Popovici was absent from the gallery
of former mayors in city hall. In 2008, the local Ukrainian community
paper
had on its front page a photograph of Popovici and the editor
wrote an article in which he condemned this omission.

When I attempted to get permission to place the plaque on the house
on which Popovici had lived, the city authorities put all sorts of
obstacles in my way.
Initially they did not want me to have a Romanian inscription.
Finally they agreed, but in the Ukrainian inscription, they would not
let me
refer to Popovici as "mayor" and I had to be content with him being
referred to
as "head of city".
To the inauguration of the plaque came a lot of people, also
Romanians from Romania.

The plaque is located on a busy centrally located street and right
opposite
to the hotel Bristol, which serves as a dormitory for the medical
students of the university.
To the best of my knowledge, the plaque has never been vandalized.

Popovici's portrait does now hang in city hall.

There seems to be a wide gap between the attitude of the authorities
and that of the general population.
