Christian -- what are the workers actually doing at the old Jewish cemetery? Are they digging up the headstones to make a wall, or was that done a long time ago? Did they know these were tombstones? If they didn't know until you told them, what was their reaction to disturbing a cemetery and the remains of people, Jewish or not?
Here are some questions for the group at large:
Is there any way to preserve the stones now, and to learn the names? Could they be moved to the newer cemetery, or could this old one be cleared and the stones but properly in place?
Am I a cockeyed optimist to even consider that, and are there others in the Cz group who would like to learn and resurrect the memory of these earlier generations, and to add this to the scope of our project at the newer cemetery?
Is there anyone able and willing to organize such an endeavor, knowing how long and hard it has been to develop, fund, and maintain the current project?
Who among us has the contacts and clout to raise the question of saving the stones with the powers that be in Czernowitz? Do you think such a suggestion would be well received there, or have we used up all our political capital with the current project, the plaque for Popovici, and the Jewish Museum?
