Even though I go to Czernowitz at least once a year,
I have not seen the tombstones of the old cemetery
and have not recently discussed their fate.
As far as I know, these tombstones were taken from the old cemetery
during the Soviet time and used as paving stones or steps near the
Turkish fountain.
A few years ago, at the time that the area near the former Turkish
fountain,
was remodeled and rebuilt, there was a rumor that the tombstones
would be discarded.
Natalia Shevchenko, who was then setting up the Jewish museum
tried to save some of the tombstones, she wanted them for the museum,
but could not find any.
As I understand it now, Some of these tombstones, or all of them, are
incorporated
in a wall which belongs to a private person and this person
does not want to let the tombstones be removed from his wall.
If I am wrong in my understanding of the situation, please anyone who
has the correct information, let me know what it is.
Also where this wall is situated.
I will be in Czernowitz in late September and at that time will find
out more
and discuss the situation with the rabbi, and any city or province
officials,
which will be willing to discuss the matter with me.
As a last resort, one or more of us, could write to the Commission of
Americans' heritage abroad.
This commission was set up to protect all religiously or culturally
significant buildings,
graveyards and monuments of Americans in their countries of origin.
The commission will intervene with the central government of the
appropriate country
in order to preserve these monuments.
I have previously asked that the newer large Jewish cemetery on
Zelena street,
be added to the list of monuments needing the protection of the
commission
and my request was accepted. As far as I know the old cemetery is not
on this list,
but the commission may be willing to consider the matter.
Anyone who is an American citizen and is interested in preserving the
tombstones,
please read up on the commission, find out whether one of the senators
or congressmen from your state, is by chance on the commission and share
the information with all of us.
Then we should write to the appropriate people to see what they can
or are willing to do.
I think that eventually, we shall need to form a committee or
organization to deal
with this matter. This committee or organization should be separate
from CJCRO.
It is a separate problem and needs very different remedies.
Our attempts to restore and maintain the Jewish cemetery on Zelena
street require
a lot of work and money and CJCRO is just not set up to handle an
additional problem.

Mimi
