I do not think that the local authorities keep count of the number
of Jewish tourists who come to Czernowitz to visit the Jewish graveyard
or the former homes of their ancestors.
And it is not only Jewish tourists with roots in Czernowitz who come
to visit
In April of this year, I saw two tour buses from Austria at the
cemetery.
I have met in Czernowitz Swedes, Frenchmen, Germans and Poles,
all of whom were visiting the city and the Jewish cemetery, because of
their interest in its Jewish cultural heritage.
If we could get all these tourists to write to the city government
and complain about the neglect of the Jewish cemetery, the misuse
of the former "Tempel" and assorted prayer houses, there is a chance
that the authorities would realize where their bread is buttered.
