With regard to the Ukrainian delegation at the Maccabi Games - I know
that there was a hockey team from the Ukraine that was in competition
- but they were late entry as a team that was supposed to come from
France had to pull out and the hockey venue needed another team for
the tournament.
Alex Zhitnick who was an NHL all star played on the Ukrainian team
and there was much speculation that he came to Israel to rediscover
his Jewish roots. When asked about his heritage, Zhitnick said he was
not Jewish - and although there may have been a few Jewish guys on
the team, the vast majority were not Jewish. This also happened in
the 1997 Games, when a Russian team pulled out and another team was
needed for the tournament.
There may have been other Ukrainian delegates.
