Bukovina today.
Bukovina ceased to exist as a geographical unit in 1919,
Then it was divided into several counties (judete)
Today the Ukrainean part is Chernivitska Oblast incl. Hotin.
The southern Rumanian part is Judetul Suceava.
Bucovina continues to exist in the folklore of the Romanian
local population.
And of the old time Jews originating in this beautiful
corner of East Europe where the Jews lived so well
for almost 200 years.

Hi Marsha - A bit of political geography:
The precise name of the country until the end of WWI was Austro-Hungary,
whose Hapsburg Emperor Franz Josef introduced progressive policies that
benefited Bukovina Jewry. Bukovina was the empire's eastern-most province
with Czernowitz as its capital. Modern Bukovina is divided between Romania
and Ukraine. My own ancestors lived in the small town west of Czernowitz of
Waschkoutz am Cheremosh, which many of its Jews referred to affectionately
as Waschkowitz. Today it is called Vashkivtsi, and lies in Ukraine's
Vyzhnytsia raion (the town of that name was once home to the chassidic
dynasty of Wiznitzer Rebbes). Raion technically translates as a 'district',
but resembles our administrative concept of a county.
