Hi Marsha - A bit of political geography:
The precise name of the country until the end of WWI was Austro-Hungary, whose Hapsburg Emperor Franz Josef introduced progressive policies that benefited Bukovina Jewry. Bukovina was the empire's eastern-most province with Czernowitz as its capital. Modern Bukovina is divided between Romania and Ukraine. My own ancestors lived in the small town west of Czernowitz of Waschkoutz am Cheremosh, which many of its Jews referred to affectionately as Waschkowitz. Today it is called Vashkivtsi, and lies in Ukraine's Vyzhnytsia raion (the town of that name was once home to the chassidic dynasty of Wiznitzer Rebbes). Raion technically translates as a 'district', but resembles our administrative concept of a county.
