This is not modern German as in use today in Germany.
This is old Habsburg Austrian which lingered on in Czernowitz
 long after being updated in Austria.

Another possibility..unlikely,but!! is a chef. Commis chef is a title

Dear Linda,

I suppose it is an abbreviation of "Commissionsgeschaeft", a term that
appears several times in that census, meaning agent or representative, who
sells products for a commission. Could also mean broker.
