[...] I am sending you a few photos taken in Stanestii de Jos in April
2009 when I visited the village together with Mimi. [Pictures 10,11,12
and 13 show] the house of my great grandfather Aisic Karpel. He was
deported to Siberia by the Russians in 1940. Some family members were
killed by the local population in June 1941.
During the visit we found the Jewish cemetery which is in poor shape.
[Sasha subsequently made more photos available from his trip, a
selection of which I put into an album called 'Santesti II' in the
'Cemeteries, Monuments & Towns' section on our website. You can view
the album by clicking on the link directly below:

For more information about what happened in Stanestii de Jos in June
1941 I [Sasha] recommend the work of Dr. Madeleine Kahn-Woloch.
KAHN-WOLOCH Madeleine,/ Basilic/, Atlantica, 2011, 172 p.
The book, "Basilic" is in French. It tells the story of Madeleine Kahn as
a little girl. Born in Paris to Bukovinian parents she was sent on
vacation in 1939 to Stanestii de Jos to spend time with her
grandmother. She could not return to Paris due to the war which started a
few weeks after she arrived .She lived after that through the events of
1940,1941 and was deported to Transnistria where she lost her
grandmother and the rest of the family.
