Yes. It was indeed am makeshift school. Professor Fred Schneider was my
classmate. Mimi came with me to see the place during the 2006 reunion,
together with several visitors from the Cz. veterans group.

The Toynbeehalle was a makeshift school for Jewish children during 1942-44
under Rumanian administration when there was no schooling for Jews at all.
But not after the Soviets returned.( if I well remember).

It is a fascinating article. A time of peace & appreciation
with no thought of the fire storm ahead.
I wonder if the Winkler's of Salzburg were part of the Café Winkler
of Salzburg after the war in Salzburg ? also
During the second Russian 1944 period the Toynbee Halle
was used as Jewish school until it was closed by a Stalin's
decree forbidding Jewish learning.
I do still enjoy reading the Gothic Schrift.
