In the western Ukraine people still harken back to the the days
of the Austrian Monarchy. That is why they accepted
and set up in a public square a statue of Kaiser Franz Josef.
The statue was a present from Arsenyi Yatsenuk, one of
the candidates for prime-minister of Ukraine, who himself
was born in Czernowitz.
In the western Ukraine they still remember that in the thirties
Russian communists, starved many of them to death,
trying to force them to join Kolchoz villages. In addition
many people from this part of the Ukraine have worked and lived
in other European countries and seen how well Europeans live.
A change in government may improve living conditions and it may not,
but it is quite certain that being under Russian Hegemony will not.
