Hello to all,

Thank you Gaby for asking to add me, and "Merci" to the moderator for doing it.

I am not a specialist of Czernowitz, as my father was, but I was always curious of this "Monde Disparu" ("Vanished World") as he used to say, when I was a child and teenager.

For a long time, he didn't want to deepen in it and search for memories, both in himself and in the cities (Czernowitz and Vijnitz) where his parents came from.

I think he was afraid of what would come up, both in his hidden memories and what would be left on the spot.
Edy and Gaby had starten earlier and sent him informations and photographies, but he wasn't ready.

And suddenly came accidentally the opportunity : I was working and Budapest and proposed him we should meet, like in the movies, at 17h00 on that day at the Czernowitz train station. He by plane, train and / or taxi, me by car from Hungary.

We then would be able to travel in the area when wished, depending on nobody, and only should hire a translator and a flat for our stay.

You probably know the rest, and the touching discoveries we made, leading him to later write his book.
Hopefully, this also lead me to carry on the memory (although sadly but naturally weakening from generation to generation) for later.

My father was a severe but righteous person, with great humor and huge intelligence, loved by all, from "former relations" and work colleagues, to a widened family circle.

All his life, he has fought to give back to our country, France, what it gave him and his parents : education, culture, security, health, landscapes and of course, great food... although my grand-parents from Czernowitz always had problems with "running away" smelly cheeses !!

Through this letter, I wish to thank you all and also to say him again how much I loved him and will always miss him...

Adieu, Papa...

David.
