In fact, there were farming communities along the Czeremosz, an affluent of
the Prut, which is part of the border between Bukovina and Galitzia, and
surely not only in this special area. While Cz was for the youngsters of
this region the natural place to go for schooling (Gymnasium, technical and
commercial schools, and to the university, especially before WWI), the
religious center was Viznitz, also on the bukovinian side. The elderly were
mostly chassidim of the Viznitzer Rebbe, who was revered by everybody.
Coming from Cz by train, crossing the frontier you came first to Zalucze.
>From there to the west and along the Czeremosz were in file the villages of
Kniaze, Drassinov, Tuczapy, and Popilniki. There the road divided, one way
leading to Kuty and the other to Kosov. The houses stood aligned along the
road, and to judge by the flowers in front of some of them (mostly
colourfull dahlias and hortensias), though these were small farms they were
quite well-to-do. They used to grow mainly wheat and corn, and I remember
vividly the gentle waves of the wheat in the wind. On holy days one place
for minyan was the house of Mr. Seidmann in Drassinov, were an aron kodesh
with the Torah scrolls stood.
As far as I know, none of those who were caught by WWII on the galitzian
side survived.
