Nr. 166 in the list: Hersch Segal - Selma Merbaum's maths-teacher at the Yiddish School Nr. 5 at Austriaplatz in Czernowitz in 1940. He was the very one who published Selma's poems in Rechovot in 1976.

"Hersch Segal war 1918 als Dreijähriger mit seinen Eltern aus Prag nach Czernowitz gekommen. Seiner Liebe zu Kunst und Literatur hatte der Mathematiker nie abgeschworen  und lebte diese Passion unter der sowjetischen Besatzung an der jiddischen Schule aus. Erlahmte die Konzentration seiner Schüler im Mathematikunterricht, gab er spontan ein jiddisches Gedicht zum Besten oder zitierte Rilke und weckte so wieder neue Aufmerksamkeit.
Segal hatte Getto und Zwangsarbeit überlebt, nach dem Krieg wieder als Mathematiklehrer gearbeitet und 1946 die Ausreisegenehmigung nach Rumänen erhalten, wo er 1962 von seiner Verwandtschaft „ausgelöst“ wurde und nach Israel ausreisen durfte. Bis 1973 unterrichtete er Mathematik an Gymnasien. Segal starb 1982 in Rehovot." (Marion Tauschwitz: Selma Merbaum - Ich will leben)
