First: Streetcar(English) is Strassenbahn(German). Desire(English) is
Lust(German). Sehnsucht(German) is Longing(English). As far as I understand
Tennessee Williams' intention by naming the play was that the streetcar by
the name "Desire" which in this case brought Blanche Dubois to her sister
where she has to face the down-to-earth facts of life represented by the
sensual brute Stanley Kowalsky. This may also be given the interpretation
that Blanche through her longing for her past life has reached the End
station of her factual life.
