Dear Marion,
Selma's birthday - I had completely forgotten it. Thank you for the
article. My maternal grand-father (Abraham Meerbaum) and Selma's father
and brother were first-degree cousins. My mother used to talk about
Selma's and her parents' fate in Transnistria, they did not return from
there. Joseph, Max's brother, had survived, emigrated to Israel and lived
near Haifa. She remembered well how Selma's parents came to visit them
when Selma was born, to show them their baby. Also, they lived not far
from each other at the time, my mother's family in the Bilaergasse.
Later, my mother who was much older, was busy with her friends and
sports and Selma with her other interests, they met, said hello, but did
not mix. She told us how she used to see Selma going to school or
downtown, always together with friends, Selma's parents had a modest
income, but very very proud, and my grand-father, whose dairy business
was flourishing, used to help his cousin Max with dairy products
whenever he came by. But when Max died, and Selma's mother remarried,
the family contact broke up.
After the war, in Romania, and when we were living in England, we knew
nothing about Selma's poems. Only later, when I came to Berlin, we
discovered the treasure Selma left, through Jürgen Serke's article in
the "Stern" magazine. Then we bought the book. Her poetry was for us an
astonishing and very moving discovery. A teenager, so mature in her
sensibility, so incredibly gifted. She lives on in our memory.
Gabriele
