Actually, they did gain quite a foothold - Chernivtsi is the only city
in the entire former Soviet Union that has two congregations, "Beit
Simcha" (Golovna St., 198A) and "The Tabernacle of Glory" (Ruska St.,
248). There is about 20 congregations in the rest of FSU, but only one
per town, including Moscow, St.Petersburg, Kiev, Minsk, Odessa, etc.
The ethnic composition of these congregations is very diverse, many
members have no Jewish ancestry.
