Hardy , you were lucky to have a Babe, one of my grandmothers died
when I was only a few month old, the other died in Transnistria.
Your Babe probably was as good as any at raising children,
At the end of the 19th and early 20th century, the death rate of
young children in Czernowitz,
must have been very high. My paternal grandmother had three of her
children die as babies,
but then went on to have 6 more healthy children.
 From what I was told, the common deadly diseases were: smallpox,
polio, diphtheria and scarlet fever.
