I am from Czernowitz, similar history as Kristov describes. Our Bukovina was given to the Soviets by Hitler, predecessor of Angela Merkel, two generations ago, if that much. It never was Ukraine. Ukraine was not an independent country for a long time, or never.
I am referring to the Ribentrop Molotov agreement of 1940.
