Although I grew up in the US and am now a young 61, I am fortunate to have living parents Blanka End Winters Age 91 and Zygi Schapira Winters Age 90 whose fondness of the Czernowitz pre WWII is always present along with the sadness of Bershad. Even my children (29,27,25) are proud of their Czernowitz heritage.
I feel fortunate to have visited Czernowitz three and a half years ago when things were quiet in Ukraine.
Zoya, who several members of the list know recently sent me warm New Year's wishes. She wrote how hard life has become there - soaring prices, young men who went East and were killed, and fears of black outs due to little gas this coming winter.
I enjoy reading all entries on the blog
and relay pertinent comments, photos, etc to my parents.
This past August, I went on a mission to show solidarity with Israelis living in the south near the Gaza border. One of my visits was to the ORT high school near Sderot. The adolescents who greeted us made me think of my father in the ORT school in Czernowitz learning machine trade. I felt connected. One amazing thing I learned at the ORT school - the students are taught not to hate and to hope for peace with their neighbors
Sorry if I strayed a bit.
I wonder if anyone reading attended the ORT school around 1940.
Shula thanks for your kind comments again

Dear Daniel! I liked your post..and I have a suggestion!! Next holiday..go
and visit and then you no longer have to imagine. The food is excellent, the
surrounding Carpathian Mountains are well worth a drive to see. Best,
Cornel

Dear friends,
Although I rarely comment, I am also here. As the grandchild of a
Czernowitzer, I am deeply grateful for this weblist and the frequent
interesting contributions from the more active list members. I think this
list has created something very special - a virtual community for those who
know Czernowitz personally and those who can only imagine it. I hope this
list continues for many years to come,
With best wishes to you all,
Daniel Ari Baker
