I was born in Canada and never even knew about Bukovina until I started
doing genealogical research 21 years ago. My grandfather, David Kastner,
born in Radautz, Bukovina (in today's Romania) never talked about where he
came from. In those days, everyone wanted to be very Canadian.
He had come to live in Canada in 1900, to join two of his brothers
who were already here. Eventually, most of his many siblings joined
him here, unfortunately, some after having survived
the Holocaust in Transnistria.
When I began, after contacting relatives, little bits and pieces came out
and
eventually formed a fascinating picture of a life that I never knew and
could only know from stories of those who had lived there and from
photographs.
Then, my cousin and very good friend, Bruce Reisch, informed me that this
list was being started and I immediately joined, eager to learn as much as
I could of my ancestral place and to hear others' stories.
I have been a list member since the beginning and feel that my life has been
immeasurably enriched by being one. I have 'met' so many wonderful people
that I could not even begin to list their names.
Some are very active list members, others, less so, some are not at all. I
have
met some of you in person (a very special treat!), others through skype,
most
through emails. But all have contributed so much to the big picture of my
family's
origins.
So it doesn't matter if you are an active member or a silent one, we are all
part of a community and we all gain so much from being so.
My personal thanks to all those who worked to give us this mailing list
at its beginning and to those who continue to work on it. To Bruce and
Jerome, who are there daily, a huge thanks. You are doing a huge mitzvah!
Merle Kastner
