Thanks=2C Alex=2C
The number makes sense=2E =
There is an interesting story to go with it=2E The factory was owned by =
my uncle=2C Leon Grossman=2C in the late thirties=2E When Barbarossa sta=
rted=2C it was of course =22nationalised=22 by the Romanians=2E The new =
=22owner=22 was a =22Regatler=22 who had arrived and received this gift=2E=
However=2C he knew little about textile weaving=2C so he retained my un=
cle as the =22Meister=22 of the factory and gave him sufficient Popovici=
certificates to retain the entire staff (all Jews of course)=2C as well=
as =22mobilize=22 whoever he needed to increase production=2E He was he=
nce able to save some tens of families from deportation to Transnistria=2E=
=
Several months after the occupation=2C refugees from Galicia and Poland =
suceeded to cross the border=2E My uncle and my father (who was the mana=
ger of the warehouse) joined the local underground =22railway=22 that sm=
uggled these refugees into Romania=2C I do not know by what means - I su=
ppose a lot of bribery was involved=2E =
What I do recall vividly was that the warehouse contained a number of de=
ep troughs=2C filled with great lengths of curtains=2C that were checked=
meter by meter to detect any failures=2C and were then rolled into big =
rolls=2E Since the refugees had to be hidden for several days=2C until t=
hey could be shipped southward=2C they were kept lying in the troughs=2C=
under the curtains during the days (with the few chosen workers there q=
uite aware of them)=2E During that certain period my father took on doub=
le shifts=2C so he could work there until the evening=2C when he could l=
ock the doors so the refugees could get around and stretch their legs du=
ring the nights=2E I was apparently trusted enough=2C so I was encharged=
every day to bring my father =22lunch=22 and =22dinner=22 It was quite =
a huge lunch and a huge dinner for one person=2E=2E=2E But who would sus=
pect a boy aged 8 of such mysterious actions=2E Just a very hungry fathe=
r=2E=2E=2E
Some years later=2C in Israel=2C I happened to walk by a certain factory=
and - lo - I met there as watchman one of the refugees (he happened to =
be a cousin of my grandfather)=2E Unfortunately the Germans were able to=
close that route from Poland after a couple of months=2E
Thanks very much Shavu=27a Tov
