Shula, in those times a lot of Jews did not have actual surnames..it was
yankel ben moishe ben etc, or sarele bat ruti etc. When told to get
surnames they were named after locations,...ie Wischnitzer, or after their
favourite tree..Birnbaum, or after their occupation..Schneider.. and so on
and so forth!!! Cornel

Subject: [Cz-L] Million dollar question

[Plain text next time --thanks]

Dear all,

Thank you, Edgar, for answering my question so well.=20

Which leads me back to (because I am dogged, if not slightly =
irritating):

"Family names were forcibly Germanised."

Is there any way one can find out what the original names were? In this = da
and age, it is hard to think of one's name being changed at a = bureaucratic
whim, with no record of it. =20

Warm regards to all,

Shula
