Ostroh is situated south-east of Rivne - former Rowno - close to the historical border between Galicia and Volhynia. Once the border between the Russian and Austrian Empire, later the border between the Soviet Union and Poland.

Rabbi Shmuel Idlish, a famous Talmudist - also known as the Maharal - is buried there.
