My maternal grandparents and their children fled to Vienna during WWI. That was "their war" my mother used to say, although, sadly those grandparents had to endure both. Of my mother's siblings, some were born in Czernowitz and some in Vienna which exacerbated the documentation issues they had in order to be legally part of their parents' family. So, for some years, the siblings had different family names . . . until they were all 'adopted' by their parents in order to resolve the naming problem.
