I am willing to take a bet the Romanians did not succeed in stopping Jews
from chattering! Cornel.

C,
There was no censorship on postcard languages; You could write in
Urdu,Tagalog or South Afgani.
They objected to gathering of Jews in public chattering Yiddish or German.
The centre of Cz never had a big Rumanian population.
The Jews obeyed and spoke Rumanian.
You never heard a more cruel murder of
the Rumanian language.

Hardy

Sorry, but that is not quite correct...in my collection I have a number of
Czernowitz-stamped postcards,both business and private,written in
German...and a few in Yiddish...and all these in Romanian times. Cornel.

With the 'cultural cleansing" of the new Romanian conquerors it became
forbidden to use another language in commerce or public transactions in
Czernowitz. Most public employees, including teachers, professors and
Medical Drs abandoned the city and started a new life in Vienna. THe fines
and punishments of the Rumanians were very strict.
