Yes ,the Germans came to the Ukraine to kill the Jews,
Some 2000 km from the Reich.
Because th Jews were a great danger to Germany.
And they needed the Ukraine for Lebensraum.
Without any Jews.
In a short time they were to find out that the
Russian Untermentschen knew how to fight.
In 3 more years the Soviets were in Berlin.

Czernowitzers, dear friends...

It was Yoram Amadon from Rosh HaAyin who, by intervention of our fellow
member Yosef Yagur, made the publication of the "Book of the Month, May
2015: Never Forget!" at our Czernowitz Book Corner possible:

http://czernowitzbook.blogspot.de/2015/05/du-sollst-nicht-vergessen-never-fo
rget.html

Yoram Amadon is the grandson of the prominent Czernowitzer professor and
philosopher Dr. Hermann Sternberg. From the depths of his family archive
Yoram shares with us Hermann Sternberg's most touching testimony on his
period of sufferance in Transnistria between 1942-1944, i. e. in a kolkhoz
in the middle of nowhere, at the "Stone Quarry on the Bug River", in
Chetvertynivka and finally in Bershad, before coming back "home" to
Czernowitz in May 1944. Among many other episodes, Hermann Sternberg reports
on "An Encounter Bershad, November 1943" with the famous painter and
Holocaust survivor Arnold Daghani (Arnold Korn) on page 37 of his diary.

Yosef Eshet wrote on August 9, 2011: "Professor (a title attached by
Czernowitzers to high school teachers) Dr. Sternberg was a family friend and
the head of our 'Barack' in Cariera de Piatra camp in Transnistria. My
parents used to meet him when they moved to Haifa."

In addition to the diary itself and its transcription you are going to find
at the above mentioned posting an illustrated document collection,
displaying

- family photos,
- Herman Sternberg's graduation „promotio sub auspiciis imperatoris“, i. e.
„under the auspices of the Austrian Emperor“, Hermann wearing the diamond
ring with the initials of the Emperor, Czernowitz 1912, including Hermann's
ceremonial address "On the Educational Significance of the Antiquity" as
well as the media coverage by Czernowitzer Allgemeine Zeitung,
- obituary on Prof. Dr. Hermann Sternberg published by "Die Stimme" in
October 1977.

Thank you so much, dear Yoram, for sharing these unique documents with all
of us and thus to make this outstanding contribution to our Czernowitz Book
Corner possible!
