Czernowitzers, dear friends...

Last month, at our Czernowitz Book Corner, we disclosed Dr. Hermann Sternberg's eyewitness report "Never Forget!" on his deportation to Transnistria. This month we are focussing on the war criminals, who were guilty of such terrible crimes against peace and humanity. Actually the "Book of the Month, June 2015" is a compilation of articles, published by "Scanteia", the official voice of the Communist Party of Romania, between May 10, 1945 - June 3, 1945:

"Scanteia" reported on the German Instrument of Surrender, which ended World War II in Europe on May 10, 1945 and as early as that, we find at the same edition (p. 3) an article headed "Death to the War Criminals". Subsequently, the series of articles (highlighted by a small red square) throughout June 1945 is covering

The First Trial Held by the Bucharest People's Tribunal Against the First Lot of War Criminals

among them Major-General Corneliu Calotescu, Governor-General of Bukovina and Lieutenant Stere Marinescu, Head of the Czernowitz Office of Jewish Affairs II, known for outstanding brutality and corruption:

You'll find the coverage for the implementation of the Czernowitz Ghetto and the deportations to Transnistria at:

The Bill of Indictment: 13.05.1945, p. 5, col. 4-6
Interrogation of the defendants: 17.05.1945, p. 5, col. 3-5
Questioning of the Witnesses: 19.05.1945, p. 5, col. 1-4
The Summation by the Chief Prosecutor: 21.05.1945, p. 1, col. 7
The Summation by the Chief Prosecutor: 21.05.1945, p. 4, col. 1-5

But that's just one part of the first trial held by the Bucharest People's Tribunal; the others are related to the 1941 Odessa Massacre, in which some 25,000 to 34,000 Jews were shot or burned as well as to the murder of hundreds of thousands of Jews in the towns and the areas between the Dniester and Bug rivers, during the Romanian and German occupation, i. e.

as well as the Targu Jiu Camp for political prisoners. Among the witnesses against the war criminals we discover the former Mayor of Czernowitz Traian Popovici, his uncle, the former Minister Dorimedont (Dori) Popovici as well as Nathan Klipper, who organized the underground aid to the Transnistria deportees:

Let me close with Dr. Hermann Sternberg's appeal: "Never Forget!"
