Hi Cz Group!
My cousin and I are still searching for anything about our family in Czernowitz.
Do any of the names below sound familiar?
Here's the emigration info about my great uncle, Jacob Merksamer: the year was 1886.
The Hamburg passenger list only says that he and the three other Czernowitzers with him are all "arbeiters" which I believe means laborers.
Jacob Merksamer - 21 Czernowitz Galz.
Simcke Rosler - 25 Czernowitz Galz.
Simon Rauchwieler - 24 Czernowitz Galz
Benjamin Seinfeld - 31 Czernowitz Galz
So we know for a fact that Jacob lived in Czernowitz and called it his home. Why are there no records of his existence there?
Was there any particular reason or problem in that area why these young men all left Czernowitz in that year?
Jacob and my grandfather, Samuel, were hat makers in New York. Could they have been hat makers in Czernowitz too?
Did such an industry exist prior to 1900?
They left behind parents and possibly siblings.
They probably all died long before the Holocaust. So what happened to all their records?
So far we have hit a stone wall.
JewishGen only shows us burial records in Vienna. We are skeptical that our family shlepped all the way from Cz to Wien when Cz had its own Jewish cemetery prior to 1941.
Where else can we go?
Thanks for reading this through and giving it some thought.
Lloyd Marksamer
