Jean, a Gutspaechter is a man who pays the proprietor of the estate a
certain sum per year, administers it in the name of the owner and in
return is entitled to all of its income. Of course he has to pay the
labourers, taxes etc. He is not at all supposed to work the estate by
himself, but there must have been also cases of Jews who did that too.
It is a sort of leasing of estates by rich, mostly Romanian Bojars who
where too lazy orr incompetent to administer it by themselves. Also
the Orthodox Religious Fond which had much land in the Bukovina worked
often through Jewish Gutspaechter.
Antisemitism in late Austrian and then Romanian times was much
influenced by this arrangements as the poor were confronted with so
called Jewish exploitation instead by that of their coreligionist
fellowmen..
