Dear Czernowitzers,

Those of you who may have read the novel “Poland” (published 1983) by James A. Michener (paperback or Kindle) may share my utter astonishment and fascination to see how much the famous American writer knew about Czernowitz and how well he describes Czernowitz in the years after WWI. In the novel “Poland" Michener uses the name 'Czernopol' but otherwise knows apparently Czernowitz well and also the details about life in multi-ethnic Czernowitz in the years immediately after the fall of Habsburg empire. The intimate knowledge of Czernowitz seems to come from someone native. The text about the mythical Czernopol reminded me of the writings by the other famous (Czernowitzer) writer Gregor von Rezzori about who I have reported to you before.
Could it be Michener to have employed Rezzori as one of his many research assistants?

Is there any information on how James Michener came across such detailed and accurate information about Czernowitz?

Poland: A Novel, Kindle Edition, by James A. Michener, Steve Berry

Thanks,

Henry Sinnreich
