Many of the original markers are of a soft stone that over time blisters
and peels so that the writing becomes eroded and illegible. This was in
the process of happening to the matzevah of my grandfather in
the Czernowits cemetery, who died in 1929, so I had a marble plaque
inscribed with the original text and this was embedded in the original
stone encases in concrete.
