Very good answers, Hardy. Thank you.
What I don't understand is why some Cz Jews perished in the Holocaust while
others were permitted to live there normally??
Who decided who was to live and who was to die?
Was it a matter of luck? How important they were? Who they knew? Who they
paid off?
I haven't heard of other Nazi occupied cities where so many Jews lived
safely, except maybe Copenhagen.
So Czernowitz was always special and did not suffer as badly as the rest
of conquered Europe. But most Jews chose not to stay there after the War.
The Soviets were not that much better than the Nazis and their
collaborators.
