Why people come to New York?
Because it is an exciting place !
The mid town skyscrapers, the Museums ,
The bridges , the rivers , The theatres, the park,
Chinatown, Little Italy, Wall street.
Dutch come for their roots ?
They come for late- night Broadway shows
Or midtown street vendor knishes,
Why do people come to Czernowitz ?
1. Because they were born there and are curious,
2. Because they promised their dad or mom.
3. "For sentimental reasons"

I can only compare Czernowitz to that other great Jewish city, New York.
Change there and here is inevitable. Nothing stays the same. You can't
bring back the way it was here in New York or anywhere else.
I look around New York today...
Where are the Indians? They were the first ones here. What did they do here?
Where did they go?
Where are the Dutch? They bought Manhattan island (an Indian name) from
them and established a thriving trade post here. The only things Dutch that
remain in NY are names of communities, rivers, and streets.
Did they disappear too or move Upstate along the Hudson River?
Where are the British? They defeated the Dutch, took over New York,
killed off the remaining Indians, and built an important seaport city. There
remains a few buildings from the British rule but not much else.
Then during the Revolutionary War, the British destroyed much of New York
and even less of their presence remained after we achieved our independence.
So, similar to Czernowitz and the rest of Bukovina, any Indian, Dutchman,
or Englishman who comes to New York to visit sites which date back to their
presence here, would be hard pressed to find any. There are few people here
who can trace their heritage back 300+ years. Probably 90% of New Yorkers
are descendants of immigrants from 1850 to the present.
And in a few years, New York won't even be a Jewish city anymore. With
all the non-Jewish immigrants moving in and the aging Jews fleeing to the
South to retire, or the young Jews moving to the suburbs to escape rising
crime and bad schools, Jewish life in New York will wind up a distant
memory.
