Reading a long discussion about a statue on Heinegasse I thought
about a famous monument to Heinrich Heine himself in Düsseldorf's
Schwanenmarkt.
As can be clearly seen in the pictures (
https://goo.gl/bKKVyD
https://goo.gl/fxK9PH ) the sculpture by Bert Gerresheim features a
very long and a very crooked nose, and when it was unveiled in 1981,
it also generated some accusations of anti-semitic stereotyping. The
only problem was that the sculpture was modeled on the Heine's death
mask, and indeed Heinrich Heine had a long and crooked nose (which
we also know from his writings). So, is Heinrich-Heine-Denkmal
anti-semitic? I don't think so. And I don't think it is the case with
a cute little sculpture in Chernivtsi.
