"Description of Bukovina following its previous and existing consistency to=
gether with the non-binding proposal on how its state constitution up to no=
w may be improved both politically and economically" by Baron Gabriel Splen=
y of Mihaldy from the year 1775 was the first account available on the situ=
ation the Austrians encountered after their incorporation into the Empire o=
f the area they called Bukovina.

tion.html
According to Dr. Nathan M. Gelber, when Austrian troops marched into Bukovi=
na in October, 1774, according to Spleny's census there were 17,047 familie=
s in Bukovina, among them 526 Jewish families giving a ratio of 38 Jewish f=
amilies per 1000 families of all religions, who were distributed over the e=
ntire land.
About three weeks ago, our fellow member Jim Wald stated that "it would be =
very interesting to know if we could trace any individual families that far=
back." Yes We Can! Dear Jim, I don't want to keep you - and others - in su=
spense for more than a few days, but in a first step let's add Spleny's "De=
scription of Bukovina" (both in German and French language) to our Czernowi=
tz Book Corner!
