Hi Hard,
Thanks for the sharpener, the picture reminds me on our old Czernowitz, with
craftsmen going through the streets, and without megaphon calling "Scheren
schleifen, Messer schleifen"...My grandmother took some knifes and went out
to him. I too , a little curious girl went with her. The sharpener had his
"atelier" on some wooden support and transmission activated a fix stone.
He hold the knife with his hands, with his foot on a pedale adcivated the
transmission and hold the knife against the stoe..and sharpened the
knife....also for the broken windowglass went the "Glaser", , with a wooden
rucksack with glasses and put on the street new glass in the window, he
called for customers.."Glasscheiben" than in Romanian, Geamuri...The
broken terracotta pots for "Sauemilkcj" were repaired like new, for the next
5 years by the tsigans calling "hodorotova" and the old trousers and blouses
were sold to "Handeles"
Can you, young generation imagine a life without supermarket, without the
every day shower, only once a week to the "Schwitzbad"
All these workers disappeared in 1940, deported to Transnistria, they were
the poor Jews from the Judengass.e.
Please overlook my mistakes, my bad English
Hedwig
