Dear Martina and Edgar,
Congratulations !
This work is sort of a Masterpiece !
Quite interactive. It leads to a set of new questions about life in the
18th century:
Why is there a Taxpayers Registry for Jews only? ( the "protection-tax"?)
I understand it was started in 1786-87 .
Then, from time to time, they wrote additions until about ten years later
when the tax increased from 5 Florints to over 12 Fl ( per year?/ per
person)
Those who could not pay- their status changed to "poor" - were expelled from
their houses?
Thank you very much!
Irene

Subject: [Cz-L] Jewish Taxpayers in Bukovina at the End of 18th Century
Czernowitzers, dear friends...
One of our topics for our EHPES Bukovina Summit Vancouver 2015 was the
scheduled disclosure of the "Jewish Taxpayers in Bukovina at the End of 18th
Century". At that particular period of time Bukovina was divided into two
districts, i. e.
1. Czernowitz, with 399 Jewish families (68 %), 2. Suczawa, with 190 Jewish
families (32 %),
as per the year 1797 according to Dr. Johann Polek's "Statistik des
Judenthums in der Bukowina [Statistics of the Jews in Bukovina]" from the
year 1889. While the data for the Suczawa District still remain to be
retrieved, by courtesy of Czernowitz Regional Archives senior archivist
Dragos Olar, in January 2015 we have succeeded to discover the first (and
main) volume evidencing the taxation of 430 Jewish families with more than
2400 souls for the Czernowitz District at the end of 18th century:

.html
Were your ancestors as soon as at the end of 18th century in Czernowitz,
Sadagora, Wiznitz or in one of the other 69 places within the Bukovinian
Czernowitz District? Here are now the step-by-step-directions for your
research:
a) Start your research by clicking on the above mentioned link.
b) Download the INDEX OF NAMES (Excel), look for a particular name(s) and
note the Family/Page No(s).
c) Download the TRANSCRIPTION (PDF) and look for the particular Family/Pages
No(s).
d) Check in the TRANSCRIPTION the details, such as professions, genealogical
relationships, etc.
e) In case your made a find, go back zu the INDEX OF NAMES (b) and look for
the Image file name(s).
f) Download the original image(s) from my OneDrive folder:

Fellow member Jim Wald stated a few weeks ago, that "it would be very
interesting to know if we could trace any individual families that far
back." These archival find is the answer on both historical and genealogical
questions and we wish you all success for your research!
