Hi, Cornel,
In the first 10-15 years of Austrian rule ?
As far as I understood, at that time, the Jews in Bukovina had no access to
German education ( and were not interested in it).
I do believe that the civil servants were all German- speaking Austrians.
How did they communicate with the "heads of the Jewish families" (the
taxpayers)?
In Yiddish , I guess.
Who can tell us more about this?
Best wishes,
Irene

Irene, why do you think there were no educated Jews?? They had to live with
others,so they had to be able to communicate. Cornel.

Hi, Hardy,
The truth is, I am not able to imagine Jewish Life in Czernowitz-Sadagura in
the 1780s , not even in 1830 !
I guess , at night, you can here also the cry of hungry children...
Can you imagine WHO hold this big brown book in his hands? How was he
dressed?
Who wrote down the "profiles" of the families?
He was not a Jew; Jews could write and read only in Hebrew.
Etc...
Irene
