Not quite true.
My great-grandparents who were strict Wiznitzer Hassidim,
moved to Czernowitz in 1880 and initially lived on the Tempelgasse.
There they sublet a room to two university students who spoke German.
but when my great-grandmother caught her son, my grandfather,
Studying a German textbook, she tore the book to pieces.
