Dear Edgar, my first installment. Best, Manny Landau

My name is Manny Landau. I was born in the town of Czernowitz, the distri=
ct of Bukovina, the KIngdom of Rumania, on February 20th, 1938. It was the l=
ast year of peace, and a year before the extermination of Europe's Jews bega=
n, but no one could imagine this in their wildest nightmares. As the Bible s=
ays: "ask from one end of heaven to the other whether such an enormous thing=
as this has ever happened or was ever ever heard of before (Deut.4:32)". I s=
tart my life's story by talking about the holocaust because I am a child of t=
he holocaust, and it shaped my life.
My parents, on the other hand, were born in the old world of Kaiser Franz=
Joseph of Austria, before the big break, and had a taste of a safer world.=
But World War I happened early in their lives. My father was 20, a medical s=
tudent in Vienna, and my mother was a 15 year school girl. She told me a fas=
cinating story about how she was made aware of the very moment when WWI bec=
ame inevitable. On that day her class went on a hike. At a certain moment In=
the evening a teacher said: "hush children, pay attention!". He pulled out h=
is watch and looked at it. At a certain moment he lowered his arm and said: "=
Now! The ultimatum has expired". It was 6 pm,July 23, 1914, 48 hours before w=
ar was declared, and the world changed for ever.=20
