Dear Friends,

I’m not at all surprised we have a diversity of opinions on the proposed
project to renovate the Leichenhalle. About 10 years ago, Helmut Kusdat
led a serious effort to restore the Leichenhalle. At that time, there was
much support for renovation efforts, and even for the idea of a small
cemetery related museum. For many of our members unfamiliar with the
Leichenhalle, here is the story of the earlier preservation effort, along
with a link to pictures of the building:

Unfortunately, Helmut Kusdat’s efforts were unsuccessful due to lack of
financing.

>From my point of view, I’m fully supportive of the current efforts. I
hope they succeed. Funding for renovations/restoration would be highly
unlikely without a future purpose in mind to create interest. But if there
is a need (a museum) behind which sponsors can rally, the chance of
success increases. That seems to be what’s happening.

Besides, isn’t there already a Holocaust memorial at the Cemetery? Why
not expand upon it?
