translation of the ditty sent to us by Ruth Levin:
Mr. Von Hagen, may I dare to ask you, which collar you wore,
When eight days ago, while in Berchthagen, you were confined to your bed
because of a stomach malady?
The fun in this ditty does not come through in English, even though
The meaning is equally silly, but it no longer rhymes.
Another similar ditty was:
"Wir Wiener Waschweiber wollten weiße Wäsche waschen,
Wenn wir Wüsten wo warmes Wasser wäre"
In English:
We Viennese washerwomen would like to wash white laundry
If we knew where to find warm water.
most of these ditties were of course not particular to Czernowitz.
They probably originated in Germany or Austria.
