According to the German "dictionary for the origin of words":
All along German painting period the undefined fruit of the tree in paradise was depicted as an apple, usually the red coloured sort. When the South-American tomatoes were introduced into Europe and Germany, the name paradies-apfel or paradeis-apfel was attributed to them in daily use of the language because of their colour.
Sounds reasonable.
In any case, the English version of paradise apple is something else entirely - a particular sort of the apple family.
