Hi Mimi,

Manfred Stern was born in Voloka, a village 10 miles south of
Czernowitz (it is currently in Hlyboka district, that's why some
sources list Hlyboka as his birth place). He was second of 12 children
in a poor farmer's family. In 1936, as a commander of the XI
International Brigade he played a key role in the Battle of Madrid
against Nazi-supported Francoist armies.

Manfred's older brother Philip was an attorney in Vienna. Two of the
younger brothers were quite famous too:

Wolf Stern (1897-1961) - Director of the Institute of Military History
in Potsdam (http://goo.gl/rkB2Jr)

Leo Stern (1901-1982) - historian, Professor and Rector of
Martin-Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg, Director of the
Institute of History of Science of the German Academy of Sciences
(http://goo.gl/iIMiol)
